Signs You’ve Got a Bad Power Steering Pump in Your Truck

A bad power steering pump can make driving your light-duty or heavy-duty truck difficult. Don’t worry. Midline Truck & Trailer Repair can replace the power steering pump if it goes bad. Generally, the power steering pump will last for about 100,000 miles. If you drive a high-mileage truck and notice any of the following problems, these are signs that the power steering pump needs to be replaced sooner rather than later.

Groaning or Moaning Noises

Groaning or moaning noises coming from the truck when you turn the steering wheel are an indication that the power steering pump is struggling. The noises will get louder if you are making a tight turn that requires you to move the steering wheel all the way to its end. You may also hear squealing noises when you first start the truck if the accessory belt to which the power steering pump is attached is loose.

Difficulty Turning the Wheel

If you are having problems turning the steering wheel, the power steering pump may be unable to circulate the power steering fluid through the system. This can make your steering feel as if it is manual steering rather than power steering. Your steering wheel may also give and take as you turn it if there is something wrong with the power steering pump or a problem with the system bearings.

Unresponsive Steering

A faulty power steering pump can also cause your truck to fail to respond when you steer it. This can be scary and make driving dangerous. You need your truck to turn every time you turn the steering wheel. If the power steering pump has gone bad, the truck may continue to go straight. Do not drive your truck if you cannot control its direction. Rather, have the truck towed to our shop.

Steering Fluid Leaks

If you see red spots on your garage floor, the power steering pump may be leaking power steering fluid. You can check the reservoir in the engine to see if the fluid level is low. If it is, it’s a safe bet that you have a power steering fluid leak. We can inspect the power steering system to find it.

Gray Power Steering Fluid

Finally, you definitely need to replace the power steering pump if the power steering fluid has turned gray. This is a sign that the power steering pump is disintegrating into the fluid.
