Whether you drive a light-duty, heavy-duty, or big rig truck, there are a handful of diesel engine problems that are relatively common. You don’t need to worry, however. Midlane Truck & Trailer Repair or diesel engine experts, and we can fix the following issues in a jiffy.
Hard Start/No Start
Diesel engines do not start as quickly as gasoline engines do, but you shouldn’t have difficulty getting the engine to fire up after a few cranks. If you do, your diesel engine needs to be serviced. We can do that here at our shop, so call us today to schedule an appointment.
Power Loss
If your diesel truck is experiencing power loss, it could be a problem with the fuel delivery. You may have dirty fuel injectors or a clogged fuel filter. Other problems that cause power loss include a loose throttle linkage and excessive lubrication.
Fuel Contamination
Because diesel fuel is thick, it can become contaminated more easily than gasoline can. Soot, glycol, and water are common diesel fuel contaminants. If the contaminated fuel makes its way into the engine, it can damage it and cause unnecessary and expensive repairs.
Excess Exhaust
All diesel engines release some exhaust, but excess exhaust is an indication that you have a rich fuel mixture in the combustion chamber. This can be caused by a clogged air filter. Other things that cause a rich fuel mixture include a leaking fuel injector or a broken EGR valve.
Oil Oxidation
If your diesel truck has been sitting for several months, the oil may have filled with tiny air bubbles. These bubbles oxidize the oil and make it impossible for the oil to protect the diesel engine properly. It’s important to have the oil changed before you drive your truck.
Excess Noise
Finally, even though diesel engines make more noise than gasoline engines do, your engine should not be excessively loud. If it is, there is something wrong. You also shouldn’t hear knocking, squealing, or other strange sounds coming from your diesel engine.
