A Malfunctioning Alternator Causes the Following Issues

Whether you drive a car, truck, or utility vehicle, there will come a point when the alternator needs to be replaced. This point is usually after 100,000 miles, so you will have had your automobile for quite some time. Do not worry. We can replace the alternator when it needs it. We are going to list issues below that are caused by a malfunctioning alternator underneath the hood.

Accessory Issues

The alternator generates electricity and converts the current from AC to DC so your power accessories can use it. This includes the touchscreen on your center console, the USB charging ports, the power windows and seats, the navigation system, and the entertainment system. Unfortunately, all of these things will malfunction if they are not getting enough power from the alternator.

Battery Issues

The alternator generates enough current that extra can be used to keep the battery charged. If the battery is not receiving this current on a regular basis, it will discharge and die. As such, you will end up with a need to jump-start the battery frequently. If your battery is relatively new, the problem most likely lies with the alternator rather than the battery itself.

Electrical Issues

Your automobile is also going to have issues within the electrical system. The most common problem is overheating in the electrical system because the alternator is malfunctioning and generating too much voltage. Anything over 14.5 volts will overheat the system. Consequently, you will be able to smell burning wires or rubber insulation in the engine or your automobile.

Headlight Issues

Another thing that the alternator powers is the headlights, taillights, and interior lights. If the alternator is struggling to produce electricity, all of these lights will be dim. If the alternator is overproducing electricity, the lights will be too bright. The alternator can also produce an unsteady stream of electricity that will make the lights flicker.

Noise Issues

Finally, you may hear strange noises coming from the engine if the alternator is malfunctioning. The noise may be a grinding sound, a growling sound, a whining sound, or a combination of these sounds. These noises are an indication that the alternator is worn out internally and needs to be replaced.

Again, there is no need to worry because we are here to help. We would be happy to remove the old alternator and replace it with a new one if you are having any of the problems discussed above. Call our shop today to schedule a service appointment.
