There are several signs that indicate it’s time for exhaust system repair or replacement. If you notice any of the following, it’s time to take your car to a mechanic.
Loud Noises
One of the most common and easily identifiable signs that you need exhaust system repair is if you start hearing loud noises coming from your car. These noises can include booming, rattling, or roaring and are usually most noticeable when starting up your car or when accelerating. Loud noises can be caused by a hole in your muffler or a loose connection somewhere in the system.
Decreased Fuel Efficiency
If you notice that your fuel efficiency has decreased, it could be due to an issue with your exhaust system. When there’s a problem with the system, it can cause your engine to work harder than usual which uses up more fuel. If you’re not sure whether or not your decrease in fuel efficiency is due to an issue with your exhaust system, the best way to find out is to take your car in for a tune-up so a mechanic can take a look.
Failed Emissions Test
Another sign that you might need exhaust system repair is if you fail an emissions test. A failed emissions test means that your car’s exhaust contains higher than normal levels of pollutants. There are a number of things that could be causing this including a cracked catalytic converter, leaks in the gaskets or pipes, or even something as simple as dirty spark plugs.
If you notice any of these signs, it’s time to take your car in for repair or replacement of the exhaust system. Loud noises, decreased fuel efficiency and failing an emissions test are all indicative of a problem that needs to be fixed before it gets worse. Ignoring these signs can lead to further damage down the line so it’s best to nip the problem in the bud as soon as possible.
